Salt of the earth...

There are three things that are farmed here in our little area of Bangladesh, rice, rice, and salt. When the little plots of land that people farm are not amenable to rice, they instead flood the plots with the brackish water from the river. The fields are flooded (or irrigated for rice) using the most cutting edge and modern technology...

The gentleman above is using a trough and lever to pump the water into the plots. After the water evaporates in the hot Bengali sun, fresh salt is left behind. The salt is then harvested, packed on trucks and then sent to some type of processing/distribution center.

Incidentally, this does have a medical application. The salt trucks delivering the salt will often make their deliveries early in the morning. Salt is invariably spilled in transit. When combined with the morning fog and dew, this makes the roads extremely slick. The result is a lot of accidents, and a lot of early morning trauma for the hospital. It was likely a contributing factor to the accident earlier this week.
