During our trip to the Hill Tracts, we were stranded in a small town called Rhong Chiri. We had to wait several hours for a jeep to take us on the rugged roads leading up to the Khyong village. While waiting, we walked through the market portion of the town as a diversion. One of the vendors we passed was selling what looked like segments of bamboo. We were confused as to why she was selling small sticks of bamboo, and asked one of the missionaries to explain. The missionary kindly pointed out that she was in fact selling raw sugar cane. She encouraged us to try some. We had no idea how to eat what looked like a piece of bamboo, so we decided to purchase an extra stick to give to a child to demonstrate. The boy above eagerly showed us how to peel the outer layers off to expose the crunchy, but edible interior.

You have to have good teeth, I did that the first day I was in Guyana and broke a tooth right down the center!! No fun!!!!
